Tumour markers are proteins in the blood that can rise with some cancers, but also with many harmless conditions. On their own they can't confirm or rule out cancer, so this test is best for women with a family history of these cancers or whose doctor has advised it. If a result is high, your doctor looks at it alongside your history and may suggest further tests. If you have a lump, unusual bleeding or weight loss, see a doctor rather than relying on markers.
