Having elevated levels of the amino acid homocysteine is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. Folic acid is used for preventing and treating low blood levels of folate (folate deficiency) and high blood levels of homocysteine. Supplemental Folic Acid intake increases maternal folate status. Low maternal folate status is a risk factor in the development of neural tube defects in the developing baby. This beneficial effect is obtained with a supplemental intake of 400�g daily for at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
